Bugatti Festival Molsheim 2025

By Jaap Horst
Photographs also Tomás Horst
The 2025 Festival had a Type 59 theme, and the organizing club, the "Enthousiastes Bugatti Alsace" managed to get an unprecedented number of T59's, T59/50B's and even a couple of T59/50S cars together.
The programme started on the Thursday, September 11, however, we arrived Thursday-evening, and participated from the Friday morning. While walking into a restaurant on the Thursday evening, we directly met with four friends, also from the Netherlands.

On the Friday there was a series of longer and shorter drives, first to a Brewery in Saverne, followed by a Lunch in Wasselonne and a visit to an agricultural tools museum. In the evening, there was the opening of the new "Les Bugattistes" Restaurant, followed by, of course, dinner.

The Saturday was special; first there was a reception / breakfast at the Chateau St. Jean, organized by the modern Bugatti who had their own rally, on the occasion of 20 years of the Bugatti Veyron. A special exhibit was organized, including some of the early prototypes, including the first appearance of the prototype designed by Walter da Silva. From there, all Classic Bugatti's went to the Anneau du Rhin racetrack, where all drivers were invited to "race".
After lunch there was a long mountainous road back to Molsheim, However, we went back to Molsheim over the main road. In the evening, there was the Gala dinner (no photographs) at the second floor of the Monnaie in Molsheim, while downstairs was an exhibition with two Bugatti Type 59/50B race cars, which were on loan from the Musée National de l'Automobile, Collection Schlumpf in nearby Mulhouse.

The schedule on the Sunday was as it has been the last few years, Breakfast in Dorlisheim. In Dorlisheim, a ceremony is held at the cemetery where many of the family members found their peace; of course Ettore and his wife Barbara and their son Jean and daughter l'Ebé, Ettore's brother Rembrandt, sister Deanice and their parents Carlo Bugatti and Therèse Lorioli.
From there, it was back to Molsheim, to the Parc des Jésuites, where all cars are on display for the general public to enjoy. With the presence nowadays of modern Bugattis, it seems that the public is changing a bit, with many of the youngsters interested in the VW-Bugattis mainly.
Lunch is held for all participants in a large tent, on wooden tables and benches. I did not see the modern Bugatti owners there, maybe they went to some place more luxurious?
We did not stay for the entire time of presenting all the Bugattis, but went home around two and still had some 700 km to go...

The photographs are organized below, per day and per specific visit. There are also two short movies, which can be seen also in the BugattiPage / BugattiRevue Youtube channel

Friday morning at a hotel in Molsheim

Friday morning we left our hotel to meet with Robert Braunschweig from Switzerland; various times in the last years, we had a ride with him in one of his Bugattis, and it would be the same this year. This time in his Type 57 Stelvio. The parking lot of his hotel was "full" of Bugatti's.

Friday morning - Start from the hostellerie du Pur Sang

The Friday morning was the usual chaos at the hostellerie du Pur Sang, some people, including myself, who had to get their registration for the event. My son Tomás took photographs of all the Bugattis he could find. Already quite a few T59's.
Fellow Dutchman Durk Stapel and his daughter Willemijn were present for the first time, in their T43 with T57 engine.

Friday morning - The Licorne brewery in Saverne.

The morning drive led to the Licorne brewery in Saverne, where we had a little tour of the factory. Of course of the brewing process itself, not much can be seen. And of course some tasting at the end.

Friday afternoon, lunch stop at Wasselonne

After the Brewery, we drove back in the direction of Molsheim, and stopped in Wasselonne to have lunch. Some of the T59's opened the bonnet, enabling to see the (huge!) difference between a T59/50S and a regular T59.

T46S Cabriolet by James Young, with rather unusual "Farzo" headlights.

T59/50S (replica). Compare with the regular T59 below. Also clear, is that with the T50S engine the camshaft drive is at the front, where in a T59 this is at the rear, as in the T57.

Friday afternoon, at the Museum of agricultural heritage of yesteryear

On the Friday afternoon, the trip led to the "Musée patrimoine agricole d'antan" in Sommerau. A museum based on the collection of agricultural equipment brought together by a group of enthusiasts.

Friday evening, dinner at the new restaurant "Les Bugattistes" in Dorlisheim

Some photographs of the Bugattis parked outside the new restaurant in Molsheim. Have a look at the specially baked bread!

Saturday morning - at the Chateau St. Jean

The Saturday started at the Chateau St. Jean and the grounds of the modern Bugatti Atelier, where icons like the Veyron, Chiron, Mistral and Bolide were assembled. There were festivities for the 20th aniversary of the Veyron also, and a separate rally for these modern Bugattis, many of which were on display on the "factory" grounds.
Apart from that, some special prototypes had been brought together, like the EB118, EB218, the 18-3 Chiron (not to be confused with the later Chiron with the 16 cylinder engine) and the first appearance of the prototype based on the 18-cylinder engine platform, drawn by
Walter da Silva.

However, we were a bit early and were not allowed in. Thus, we took some time to photograph the Stelvio in front of the Villa, where the Bugatti family had lived.

The classic Bugattis that also take part in the Rally

Saturday morning all Bugattis, classic and modern, are gathered around the Chateau St. Jean. I'll show the classics here first.

Various Modern Bugatti prototypes on display

W18 -18 cyclinder engine of the EB218. Note that it has two banks of 6 in a regular V, and a 3rd bank of 6 laying flat. Wouldn't it have been much better to build the outer two banks as a V, and the 3rd one in between? Usually special design to cooling and oil system is needed for cylinders laying flat.
That it did not work out with this engine can be easily seen, there is a huge crack in the carter, on the upper side (see details).

Sketch by Ferdinand Piech for the W18 engine. Note that the outer banks of the "W" are in a 120 degree angle, with the 3rd bank inbetween.

As Bugatti could not get the W18 engine functioning reliably, and they needed more power, the W16 quad turbo engine was designed and fitted in different modifications in all Bugattis from the Veyron until the Bolide.

Line-up of the 2-door EB118, the four-door EB218 and the 18-3 Chiron. All used the W18 engine. For specifications on all classic as well as all modern Bugatti go to this overview.

Below: A row of Veyron Prototypes, with at the end the Walter da Silva design with W18 engine. Apparently, this design never received a proper name like the EB218 or the 18/3 Chiron or the 18/4 Veyron.

More modern Bugattis

Bugatti Divo

A Bugatti Mistral, and two Chiron's. It seems that they belong to the Bugatti company, at least no. 42 belongs to (or was at least driven by) Mate Rimac. I also photographed the Chassis numbers, which by law must be visible through the windscreen.
The Mistral is a development pre-series vehicle with a data collection device (by GIN.de) on board. Initially I thought it was an additional battery, but in fact, that is not the case.

Driving around the Chateau, and out of the modern Bugatti factory grounds.

Saturday morning, at the Anneau du Rhin racetrack

From the factory grounds we drove directly to the racetrack. Only a few photographs were good enough to publish here. The Blue Roadster is Andrea Capra's new Bugatti, a Type 44.

Saturday afternoon, lunch in "La ferme des moines" in Jungholtz

Saturday evening, Gala dinner, and exhibition of two Bugatti T59/50B's

No Pictures of the dinner, however quite a few of the two Bugatti T59/50B's on display. And also quite a few interesting photographs as well as a few drawings.

The Bugatti T59/50B, chassis 50180. This car won the first post-war race, the coupe des prisonniers, in 1945.

Bugatti T59/50B, Engine no. 3. As it was a factory race car, it never received a chassis number.

Various photographs and two drawings.

Mr Weibel Jr. gives his impressive Type 46/50 with replica Weinberger body a last polish shortly before the show begins.

Sunday morning - the Bugattis in Dorlisheim

Sunday morning usually there is the breakfast in Dorlisheim, offered by the municipality there. Of course, the Bugattis are parked there in two long rows.

Sunday morning - Ceremony at the Dorlisheim graveyard

After breakfast it was time for the ceremony at Ettore's tomb in Dorlisheim. The Festival is always organised around Ettore Bugatti's birthday, the 15th of September.

Ettore Bugatti is honored with flowers by many different organisations and people, of course the Enthousiastes Bugatti Alsace (EBA, the organizing organisation), the Bugatti family, The Kestler family and last but not least the modern Bugatti factory. This time Mate Rimac was also present, with his Bugatti Chiron parked across the street.

All participants driving off from Dorlisheim, on their way back to Molsheim, to the presentation.

Sunday - Presentation of the Bugattis in Molsheim

After the ceremony, the cars are presented to the public, at the Parc des Jésuites.

Jacques and Irian Paul, with the Bugatti Type 40 with body by Bousson. The car is in the family since the 1930's, and Jacques parents used it for their Honeymoon before WWII. They have been at the Festival more than 20 times.

Above: Nice to see a GP-Bugatti in Spanish colours, for a change! Even if it is (probably) a replica.

Below the line-up of 8 (!) Bugatti T59's, in various variants. Note that of the two T59/50B's from Mulhouse (the ones on the extreme right of the line, and the 3rd from the right) many of the spokes in the "Piano-wire" wheels are broken.

The modern Bugattis attract a lot of attention, though it seems from a a slightly different crowd than the classic ones.

Thank you, Robi!

A special thanks goes to Robert Braunschweig, who took my son and me in his Bugatti the whole time, while his wife Mogi was seated in the back. Below a photo of the four of us, and one of your author at the wheel of the Stelvio.

List of all Bugattis

For those of you who want to know the chassis numbers of the Bugattis, Christian Anicet put them all together. This is for the entire festival. The participation numbers, like #174/7, coonsist of two numbers; the first one is just a following number assigned to the car the first time it participated at the Molsheim Festival. Thus the higher number, the later it participated for the first time. The second number is for how many times the car participated. This for car #174/7 it is the seventh time it participated at the Festival.
